The Reason I Sew…

My Grandma aka: GiGi

Over the years, I find that I sew for a number of reasons.  Sometimes it’s for hire but mostly it’s for love.

I sew because I love my Grandma, my mom, my husband, my kids, in short, my family and my friends.  I sew because I like to give my loved ones something that is one of a kind, that only I can give.  I sew because I enjoy the process of making the gift almost as much as the moment of giving the gift and seeing the look on their face when they open it.  (See my GiGi’s face?  Her smile makes my day!)

When someone takes the time to hand make a gift, whether it’s sewn, painted, or glued & taped, it’s like giving away a part of themselves.  The gift is sort of a token that says, “I love you.  I stopped everything else I was doing to take time to focus only on you and create this for you.”

I don’t know about you but, sometimes, when I make a gift instead of buying one, I’m not sure if what I have given is adequate.  In the end, I shouldn’t worry.

It’s always adequate to tell someone that you love them.  Whether it’s through sewing, baking, sending a card, a phone call, a visit, a hug…. taking the time to say, “I love you” is always a precious gift.

Well, that’s all for now.  Thanks for reading!

Why don’t you take a minute to let me know your reason/reasons for sewing.  I’d love to know.  Or better yet, take a minute to tell someone how much you love them.  It’s a gift that only you can give!

Sewing Machine Nostalgia with Betty Hutton

Hi Ladies! and any Crafty Gents!

I hope you all had a lovely Monday!  I spent the day working on my promised “Place Mat Love Part 2 – The Binding…”  For now, I’ve got some pictures to share and soon, yes, very soon, I will actually be posting my very first official video tutorial which details the “how-to’s” of putting this baby together with NO hand sewing required!!!  Woot!  LUV those sewing tips!

But, before I share place mat pictures, please join me in a moment of cinematic nostalgia with the lovely, Betty Hutton, singing, “The Sewing Machine Song.”

Wasn’t that fun? I hope you liked it as much as me. She was one great performer….

Anyway, here’s a few pictures (a sneak preview) of what I’ve been up to today. And I will be posting the binding video just as soon as possible.

SEWING ROOM MAKE-OVER

Having a sewing/crafting room all to yourself that is truly just for you, is a real luxury.  Sometimes this is achieved by the joint efforts of a husband-wife team.  And, sometimes, it must be achieved slowly, over time, in stealth mode…..

Over a period of about 4 years, I slowly overpowered an entire room of our home with all of my sewing/crafting supplies.  This was a deliberate process.  At first I started out with putting a regular computer desk into our spare bedroom.  This desk often did double duty as a sewing table, but it was just too high to use comfortably.  So, eventually I “had” to bring in an official sewing desk.

Before: Functional, but Drab

Then, it became difficult for me to prepare meals in my kitchen because my large counter-top was also my fabric cutting area.  So, I “needed” to buy a fold-away cutting table and large rotary cutting mat.

Before: Naked Cutting Table & lots of storage underneath

Anyway, having a room all to yourself is a real treat.  But having one that is decked out with your own personal touches is even better!

So, here are a few pictures of my room AFTER I decided I would also use it for teaching sewing lessons.  I really enjoy using this space for teaching classes and for creating my own projects as well.

AFTER: Same Room, Lots of Changes...

AFTER: Cutting Table - wearing a skirt (still storing stuff underneath!)

If you like these cabinets, you can get them at Humble Sewing Center.  Note:  I added the skirt to the white one.  You can check out more from Arrow by clicking this link:  Arrow

As you can see, I like “cute” looking vintage decor.  By the way, if you look at the 1st “Before” photo, there is a dark brown chair with a piece of blue fabric draped over it’s back.  That chair was once my Grandmother’s and I have since painted it pink and re-upholstered it to go better with my pistachio green sewing desk.  I think she’d like it…

Even though I absolutely love this room, I can understand if the pink and green theme may not be quite your preference.  So, I am posting a short video clip of our beloved, Nancy Zieman, giving us an inside peek at her personal sewing room aka “Dream Sewing Studio by Koala.”   It is VERY classy and amazing.

Gotta mention:  Humble Sewing Center is also a dealership for Koala and they always have some great deals.  For more dream room options from Koala, just click this link:  Koala

Happy viewing, shopping, sewing, and crafting!
